Creative Technology
Smart Charging LEGO Camper Van
Connected electric cars recharging, secured with Intel SGX.

The Challenge
Develop a secure, autonomous payment architecture where IoT devices could both make and receive payments - demonstrated by an interactive, playable prototype.

My Role
Partnered with a payments agency to build an initial Raspberry Pi prototype with stored credentials, then collaborated with Intel to migrate credentials into Intel SGX secure enclaves. Constructed a LEGO cityscape featuring an LCD smart charger station and a custom LEGO camper van fitted with a compute stick and colour LCD screen.
Solution and Impact
Users navigate the camper van across the cityscape. When it rolls over a charging sensor, the vehicle autonomously discovers the charging station, negotiates payment - including supercharging for a low battery - pays securely, and receives charge authorisation. A dashboard screen displays the real-time negotiation data, making IoT payment flows visible while educating audiences about machine-to-machine economies.

Depth of Technology
WiFi links Intel Compute Sticks in the vehicle and the charger, running C# software, with payment credentials protected in Intel SGX secure enclaves. Custom LEGO builds house the IoT hardware: the camper van contains the Compute Stick, an NFC sensor and the LCD; the cityscape's charging station carries RFID/NFC sensors, its own Compute Stick, an LCD and the dashboard screen.
